Christmas window displays & why you shouldn't underestimate them

It’s no secret that ‘Christmas’ is a term often synonymous with decorations – the giant inflatable Santa Claus outside your neighbour’s house, your town’s spectacular light displays and the Insta-worthy image of your dog wearing reindeer antlers. Subsequently, your Christmas window displays and shop decoration ideas need to be just as impressive.
Why your Christmas window merchandising is so importantOne of the most important reasons why you ought to carefully think through your Christmas window displays is because this is the primary advertisement of your store – it is the first thing the customer sees and, frankly, the most influential reason when drawing them through those shop doors. It is true that no matter the time of year, your display needs to be three things: creative (everybody does the same thing – you want to do something a little different to stand out), eye-catching (if they aren’t enticed to look at it in the first place then it is doubtful they will make the effort to come inside) and honest (the most successful displays are the ones that stay true to your brand’s voice and character). Therefore, one of the very best things about Christmas is that it is the one time of the year when you can truly go all out with your shop display.
The principle thought that should always be at the forefront of your creative decisions is customer engagement – you know your target audience better than anyone so what would they like to see in your shop decoration? If you’re a store owner and pulling in more customers (and thus more sales) sounds appealing to you, read some of our ideas for Christmas window decorations alongside some of our favourite examples for inspiration.

Tell a story – Better yet, tell your brand’s story in a Christmas fashion so to both keep true to your company’s message and personality while ensuring that your display is like no one else’s. This marketing idea is particularly powerful if you have a series of shop windows to decorate. As curious beings, there is something very appealing about following an eye-catching story which emulates the brand’s values all the way to the store’s entrance.

Don’t overpower – There is the temptation to go a bit mad with the Christmas window lights and display and blame it on the time of year however this can be detrimental. The aim is to be eye catching without looking like you’ve thrown a lot of bold colours and designs at a display case. Sometimes, one bold decoration is enough. We really like Chloe’s window which has the drawing-in factor of the sequins without overpowering the display.

Play around with materials – Creative window décor should not be limited to just images and products; playing around with different material types not only makes you stand out but it is also quite a simple design to pull off. Our favourite examples include Zanotti’s hanging clear gem display and Michael Kor’s gold and silver take on the baubles theme.

Overall, if you can understand the importance of Christmas visual merchandising and your Christmas window displays then you are half way there and if you ever need some assistance in sprucing up your display, Shimmerwalls is always available to help.
